“So, do you have a job yet?”
If a survey were to be taken, and maybe there already has been, I’d assume that this question would rank at 99.9% dreadful and irritating. As recent college graduates, we’re going to hear this question repeatedly until we do, in fact, land a job.
What do we do in the mean time? Plenty of things! Such as sending out a press release to any and everyone you know sharing that you’re in the middle of an extensive job search, when you land a job you’ll be sure to share the news, and that no questions will be taken. In all seriousness, here’s a few things to do and remember during your search:
Don’t get too picky: No one lands their dream job straight out of college. Apply for your dream job, but also apply for positions that somewhat interest you. Don’t be afraid to apply for internships either. Some agencies only hire in-house. Apply for the positions you are passionate about, but also apply for those that will allow you to get your foot in the door.
Get creative: Employers receive a large amount of applications and emails a day. Figure out how to grab their attention. Whether it’s adding a personal story to your cover letter, putting ‘Hire Me’ on your graduation cap, creating a visually pleasing resume, or hand delivering your application, do something that reflects your personality and you as a professional.
Create your own work: While you are unemployed, make sure you’re still using your skills. Start a blog, write for a magazine/newspaper/etc, plan and execute community events, or help a local artist with their next album or video release. Establish a quality client base of your own to give back, but to continue to gain experience and keep busy.
Don’t stress out: Seriously, don’t do it. You will find a job. During your search, make sure you take some time out for yourself. Enjoy these last days of freedom. Take a vacation, go out with friends, lay out by the pool and read a book, go to a weekend long music festival. Whatever you choose, enjoy yourself! You worked hard to get to this point, you deserve some down time.
If you’re in the middle of a job search or have been through it, comment or tweet (using #twistonpr) your experiences and advice. Good luck!!
