Dinner Etiquette 101

Dinner etiquette might not seem too relevant, but you never know when it will come in handy. Besides, you always want to use your best manners at the table. While attending Region Day for my sorority, I was able to attend a session on dinner etiquette. Below are the main take aways, that will help you get by any formal dinner!

“If you know the reasons behind the rules, you can play by the rules.”

 Work your way in:

The table is usually set with a lot more silverware than you may be used to. They key thing to remember is to start from the outside and work your way in. The silverware furthest away is to be used for salad or an appetizer. The silverware closest to your plate is to be used for the main course. If there happens to be an utensil behind your plate is to be used for dessert.

Another thing to note is that YOUR bread is sitting on the left left and YOUR drink is always on the right. Remember this and there won’t be any confusion on whose water is whose.

 Napkin Control:

Surprisingly, there are napkin rules. Here is what you do with your napkin in different situations:

-When you first pick up your napkin, it is important that you unfold it under the table.

-When you are leaving the table, place the napkin on your chair.

-When you and majority of the table is finished eating, set your napkin in the table.
